Default '95 Trail Deluxe boggy in mid-range

re: 488 fan

Just went thru the carbs and all is clean inside and it runs kinda Ok if the throttle is feathered up from idle but if the throttle is squeezed at idle it loads up and bogs until the Rpm's increase.

Runs fine at approx. 3/4 throttle but bogs slightly at full throttle.

The correct main jets (240) are installed (for temp and elevation) and I've dropped the needles one notch to try and lean it out but no difference. The clips are currently in the second notch from the top (one above the middle).

The air mixture screws are out about 1 3/4 turns.

I believe it has good compression but will double check with a gage.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Did it do this before you took the carbs apart?
change the plugs

idle bogging could be a stuck choke ,or air mixture screw.
bogging at at full rpm,,you're carbs may not be in syc. perfectly.
,,check to make sure the needles are secure
or you have a worn clutch or belt.
since it is a fan if it is above 5c you will get some bog at full throttle

It wasn't running before I cleaned the carbs (they were a little varnished). I took out all of the jets and made sure they were open. I'm going to run some Seafoam thru the tank to help clean anything I may have missed.

The spark plugs are new.

I think the chokes are Ok. They didn't seem to be stuck when I pulled them out.

Not sure how to sync. the carbs without a vacuum gage.

The bog seems to appear before the clutch engages so I don't think it's the clutch or belt and it was only 15°F (-9C) when I was running it so I don't think it's the main jetting.

Basic carb syc. can be done with a drill bit just pick one that fits under the carb slide and make sure they bolth touch the same.
also at wide open they should clear the carb opening and not hang down.

The idle air screw did you just set it to 1 3/4
or did you adj. it as per the manual,
,I think (may be wrong) it's start at 2 turns out; turn it in until you get your maximum idle increase then turn it out 1/4 turn .
It takes a couple tries.
If adjusting it doesn't do much the idle holes are still blocked.

Thanks Mike.
I tried setting the idle/air screw per the manual.
Will give your method a try.
