Al's Mystery Parts Page

Last updated: 12/04/2004 10:41:29 AM -0600

Here is a collection of parts that was included with the 1918 Chevrolet 490 I just purchased. I'm pretty sure none of the parts shown below belong to the 490. I would like to ID them so that I can try to get them to someone that needs them. Admittedly some of the parts may be beyond salvage but I would like to know what they are from. Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will update this page with anything I learn about the parts.

If you think you recognize something please let me know through the forum or E-mail me at allan.lewis@sympatico.ca .

All of these parts are for sale (cheap!) so make me an offer and I'll probably take it - I just want to get this stuff to people that need it.

Part #1: A hood that is in very rough shape. It'll probably end up in the scrap pile but still curious as to what it's from.

UPDATE: R.I.P. - This item has gone to scrap.

Part #2: A front license plate bracket (with a 1928 NY license plate on it - I wonder how it ended up here in Collingwood, Ontario?)

UPDATE: Figured this one out on my own. It is actually a rear spare tire carrier for a Model T. Needs some work but definitely salvageable. I think it is for '23 to '25 model years. Please correct me if I am wrong. Contact me if you are interested in it. allan.lewis@sympatico.ca .

UPDATE #2: I've been informed that this spare tire carrier was used from 1920 to 1925.

UPDATE #3: This has found a new home.

Part #3: A rear fender. I was hoping it was for the 490 but it doesn't seem to line up and doesn't have the correct mounting points.

UPDATE: Thanks to Dave Huson for letting me know this is a 1924 or 1925 Model T right rear coupe fender.

UPDATE #2: This has found a new home.

Part #4: A selection of dash panels. Two small ones are very rough - top one is solid and salvageable.

UPDATE: Several people have let me know that the bottom panel is from a Model A Ford.

UPDATE: From pictures I glanced at in a Chevy parts manual I believe the middle plate is late 20's Chevy.

Part #5: A wood firewall. Rough shape. Starter switch seems to be the same as on the 490 so I'll probably keep this one for that.

Part #6: This looks like the panel that would go under the rad between fenders on something. Looks salvageable.

UPDATE: Thanks to Dave Huson for letting me know that this is a Ford Model A radiator apron.

UPDATE #2: This has found a new home.

Part #7: A pair of panels that go from the body down to the running boards. Top edge is rusted but I believe these can be saved.

UPDATE: Thanks to Dave again for letting me know these are Model A splash aprons.

UPDATE #2: These have found a new home.

Part #8: A steering column assembly with steering box. One of the levers has broken unfortunately.

Part #9: A front fender with a (winking) headlight bucket. A few problem spots but lots to work with. Should be salvageable.

UPDATE: Thanks to Dave Huson for letting me know this is a left front 1926 Model T fender.

UPDATE #2: This has found a new home.

Part #10: I have no idea what this is. Looks like it will unscrew but I haven't done it yet.

UPDATE: A few people have told me this is a Model T steering gear.

UPDATE #2: I gave this part to the person that bought my T frame so it's gone.

Part #11: Another complete mystery. Some sort of connecting lever.

UPDATE : Thanks to Guy Moreau for sending me a picture of his '28 Chev that had this part on it. He says it connects the tie rod to the pitman arm of the steering column. Then I realized I had a tie rod as well! See below. The question now is - is this the same set-up used on the 490? Somehow I doubt it but I want to make sure. Please let me know if you know. allan.lewis@sympatico.ca . This item is not for sale until I determine if I need it for the 490 or not.

UPDATE: The knuckle is definitely not for the 490 but the tie rod is! Steering knuckle is now available if you need it.

UPDATE #2: The knuckle has been sold.

Part #12: Three rods with pistons. Quite long. Part number 22701 and a rounded cross with what looks like a D I F in it on the rod.

UPDATE: Thanks to an E-mail and subsequent research I discovered the DIF stands for Dearborn Iron Foundry which made parts for Ford. So I'm pretty sure these are Fords parts now - question is for what???

Part #13: A head from a small flat head motor. Couldn't find any casting marks but it is heavily rusted.

Part #14: A top windshield frame with manual wiper. A little wider than the windshield that came with the 490. Very rough but it could be worth saving if it is a rare part. Windshield measures approximately  39 "X 11".
